We Eat Social Media for Breakfast

The author uses diction, syntax, tone, and rhetorical strategies to develop his main argument.  The author used diction well especially at the beginning because he made sure us readers could easily understand what he's talking about and relate to what he's doing, since we've all at some point taken pictures of our breakfast. His choice of words made it easy for us to understand what he's talking about, and his use of syntax expresses his attitude toward what he did. His use of tonew shows us how he feels about technology, and he shows us that he understands why we communicate online. The author also uses rhetorical strategies in his writing.  For example, at the beginning he uses metaphors when he says "I'm a wannabe Millenial" and then he uses a simile when he says "If that sounds like a mouthful". He uses uses hyperbole when he says "we snap 100 shots at a time". The authors main argument and the message he's trieng to tell us is that we no longer tell the stories of our pictures, but our pictures tell the stories of us. Meaning we're too busy trieng to show other people how we live our lives, that we don't even live and enjoy our lives like we should. For example, when we go camping or go somewhere with our family, we're too busy trieng to take good pictures to post on snapchat or Instagram, and we forget the main reason why were there which is too spend some time with our family and just have fun. Another point that helps out the authors argument is when he says " online and electronic tools can help us amplify and accelerate our thinking, but you can't 3D print a hug". I totally agree with that statement because it's not the same to interact with someone through your phone than it is in person.

The Digital Divide

The use of technology isn't really helping me get ahead and achieve my goals, I feel like it's holding me back. I feel like technology can be something we can really take advantage of and use for our own good in many ways, but we all use it to waste time and not focus on what's important and achieving our goals.

Ignite Talk

My Masterpiece topic is about time. Who invented time? And how did people back then manage their day without having clocks and watches.
One thing I did over the break to explore my question topic was research some information about how it was invented and by who.
One thing I learned from exploring over the break was that the Egyptians and Babylonians were the first people to use time.
One connection I see between this course and my question is that nowadays we don't know how to manage our time wisely, we waste all our day on meaningless things, just like the society in Fahrenheit 451 who were easily controlled and wasted thier time on technology.
What I'm doing next is try to learn more about this topic by watching videos or reading a book about time.

F 451 Essay

The difference in Ray Bradburys tone with regard to Clarisse and Beatty is that he describes them totally different from one another and we can picture and imagine them how they are just by reading the story. Bradbury describes Clarisse as a delightful human bieng thats aware of her surroundings and thinks on her own unlike the rest of the society.  She is considered dangerous by Beatty who is the villain of the story and nothing positive is said about him in the story.

F 451 Wrap Up

1)  The men laughed because that phrase had been over used over time.

2)  Montag still cared about Mildred because he loved her even though she couldn't care less about him and she was the only family he had near him.

3)  The hands of Grangers grandfather and Mildred symbolize how hard the people worked or what good actions a person makes.

4)  Just like Faber told Montg, it's not really the books that we need and are important, but what's in the books, the messages, lessons and meanings. Grangers remembrance of his grandfather is the same because he misses everything his grandfather did for him and all his kind actions, will keep living even though he's dead.

5)  3 seconds is "all the time in history" because 3 seconds can go by really fast or really slow .

6)  The significance of the Phoenix is that it symbolizes how life can be renewed .

7) Montag was a completely different man in the end of the story than when he was a firefighter who followed society and didn't think. By the end he know understood and thought on his own and the men realize they have encountered a new man.

A Step Ahead of the Hound

1)  At the Blacks house Montag secretly planted books in the garden.

2)

3)  Fabers TV is almost the size of a postal card.

4)  The show on the TV while Montag was on the run was that a new mechanical hound is looking for Montag.

5)  When everyone looked out of thier Houses Montag was running from the new mechanical hound.

Run Montag Run

I think the book will end by Montag not bieng able to hide anymore and will end up killing himself with his books . Just like the women had done it when he and Beatty went to burn her books. I think he will decide he'd rather die with his books than live without them.

The Chase is on

1)  The hound attacked Montag because he killed Beatty.

2)  Montag defended himself by shooting the flamethrower at him, but not before it stubs him with a needle full of anesthetic .

3)  Montag realized that Beatty wanted to die. When they were both confronting each other he stood there, not trieng to save himself before he would be burned.

4)  Montag went to get the books he buried in the garden.

5)  When Montag crossed the street he almost got ran over by a bunch of kids joy-riding (driving).

Montag Kills

Montag turned the flamethrower on Beatty because he was overwhelmed with the fact that his own wife had turned him in and he couldn't believe how his life had changed so fast. He also wanted to protect his books which he now loved and found a passion for.

Questions Part 2

1)  In the scene where Mildred and Montag read books together, their separate reactions are that Montage is more interested than she is, because she'd rather watch television because she feels like books aren't "alive".

2)  The effect throughout sections 1 and 2 of the bombers flying over is suspense. It also shows us that the society is involved in some sort of crisis, but the people ignore the bombers.

3)  Professor Faber is a Philosopher who Montag goes to for help.

4)  Montag reacts by outbursting in the subway because he realizes that the society he lives in does not think on their own, but is just bombarded by shows and advertisements .

5)  The argument that Faber makes for books is that it's not just the books themselves that are important, but what's in the books.

6)  The "small green metal object" is the green bullet that goes in Montags ear so that Faber can talk to him whenever and wherever.  It allows Faber to listen in on the conversations that Montag has.

7)  The white clown show, leads me to believe that the television programing in this society, is meant to show the society of people in the book to be mindless people, who are easily amused.  I think Bradbury is showing us that the people in the books society don't think on their own and are easily distracted just like little kids.

8)  Mrs Phelps cries when Montag reads "Dover Beach" because she hears emotion in his words. The society that they live in, they say literature is harmful.

9)  Montags destination at the end of section 2 is into the wilderness because he can no longer remain in the city after killing Beatty. Mildred had turned in Montag, and Beatty and the other firefighters came to his house but Montag turned the hose onto them .

Questions 1-12

1)  Ray Bradbury starts the novel with "it was a pleasure to burn" because the protagonist is Guy Montag and he is living in a futuristic society where people called firemen are in charge of burning outlawed books. He considers it a "pleasure to burn",and feels he's doing the his duty by helping to get rid of them.

2)  In the opening scene books are compared to birds because Bradbury uses the birds as a symbol for what books can do for our minds.  Books help our thoughts take flight, and help us be able to think independently and not just in other people's viewpoints. So it's a symbol of how books are freedom.

3)  The difference between Montag and Clarisses lives is that Clarisses house is full of light and affection, where as Montag, his house is complete darkness, where no sound from the great city could penetrate .

4)  The technology within the novel compares to our current technology he described almost exactly what we have nowadays but in his imagination. Technology did not improve the quality of life for Montag and his wife Mildred because technology may have made life convenient, but it had also robbed it if meaning . The scene in the bedroom shows us that Montage quality of life has been harmed by the technology.

5) ?

6) The author introduces the character of Clarisse before Mildred because Clarisse is a person full of life and ideas and Mildred is the opposite, like a robot. So we can see how much better, or how everyone should really be living instead of like Mildred.

7)  All the houses are fireproof in the society so when the firemen burned  books, the books burn but not the houses.

8)  Mildred required Emergency service because she had overdosed with pills in a suicidal attempt. The service that is provided was not at all important for the paramedics who just wanted money and replaced her intoxicated blood with new blood.

9)  The mechanical hound is a dog shaped robot with 8 legs. It was made of metal and it's purpose is to hunt down and kill fugitives who violate the law of the society.

10) The society considers Clarisse "anti-social" because she refuses to participate in thier activities and enjoys talking, thinking, unlike the rest of the people.

11)  When the womens house is raided she lights the match herself because she'd rather die with her books, then live without them.

12) The relationship between Montag and Mildred Is not a good happy relationship, they don't remember when they met so that tells us that they don't really care much about each other.

Gatsby Chapter 4

1) The truth that Gatsby tells Nick in this chapter is a wide and varied history of himself, about how he had wealthy Midwestern parents from SF , was educated at Oxford, collected jewels in Europe, hunted big game , and was awarded medals in WW1 .

2) The truth that Jordan tells Nick is that Gatsby is in love with Daisy Buchanan and that Gatsby bought his mansion in West Egg Solely to be near Daisy.

I don't believe Gatsby because as he unfolds his story he gives the first strong indication that he isn't quite what he presents himself to be and he's not a good liar.

Music as Literature

Music can be considered literature because just like literature, music tells stories, teaches you lessons , and is a way of the artist expressing themselves just like poets do in literature.  The difference between a novel, a poem, a rap, a song,  an opera and a Symphony is the way in which the person is expressing themselves, they may do it differently but they all have a message or purpose .
